We’ve been “Rickrolled!”

Over twenty years after his hit single went to No. 1 in 16 countries, 80s pop star Rick Astley has been nominated in the category Best Act Ever as his fans take his hit single ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ literally and flock to write-in his name as a nominee.

Rick Astley – in his first ever nomination in the history of the MTV Europe Music Awards – will compete against Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Green Day, Tokio Hotel and U2 for Best Act Ever.

The finalists in the Video Star category were also revealed today as selected by MTV - with Madonna receiving her only EMA nomination this year for ‘4 Minutes’. She is battling for the Award against 30 Seconds to Mars, Santogold, Snoop Dogg and Weezer.

Here are all the nominees for Best Act Ever and Video Star:

MTV lost touch with popular culture a long time ago and seems happy now to promote anything that will sell to brainless teenage girls and the more it tries to create popular culture and influence it the more society will abstain. Hence Rick Astley. The people voted. The /b/eople will continue to vote.

We like Rick for what he stands for. We love him for his resilience . MTV's coverage of Rick Astley in this regards has been so condescending. There is no Rick Astley Debate. Of all those nominated only Rick and maybe U2 at a push deserve to be there. The debate should be about Tokio Hotel, a nothing fad band that will disappear from whence it came in a very short time.

MTV needs to know that we are not their sheeple. What they promote is not what the populus want. The joke here is not Rick Astley. The joke is MTV itself.

Me deu a impressao que ele nao entendeu direito o que aconteceu e que nao esta ciente do rick roll. Apesar de ter ficado surpreso e ja saber que as coisas no pop tendem a ser bizarras, esta achando que nao vai dar em nada no fim e nao se importa muito pq nunca levou isso mt a serio, nem na epoca.

Tiozao vai perder uma chance de ouro se nao mudar o discurso
