Hubble's Supernova Eye
The remains of a once-explosive supernova illuminate part of a nearby galaxy in this image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. Dubbed N 63A by astronomers, this supernova remnant sits in a star-forming region of the Large Magellanic Cloud, an irregular galaxy about 160,000 light-years outside our own Milky Way and is visible from Earth’s southern hemisphere. Supernovae are caused when massive stars reach the end of their life and explode, emitting a shockwave that astronomers believe may trigger star formation in dusty, gaseous regions of space. The original star that exploded into the N 63A remnant is believed to have been about 50 times as massive as the Sun. But astronomers said the remnant itself is still fairly young, and more likely to disrupt surrounding dust and gas than it is to boost star formation. This visible light image shows the swirls and eddies of gas and dust caused by N 63A, but the actual effects are much larger. Other observations in the radio, infrared and X-ray regions of the light spectrum show a more expanded bubble encompassing the supernova remnant. Those additional observations also detected regions of star formation ongoing between 10 and 15 light-years from N 63A. The ejecta from the supernova explosion could reach those regions within a few million years and incorporate itself into the formation of any planets that may form around the area’s Sun-like stars, astronomers said.
