Google has confirmed it is working on a desktop linux project, but declined to supply further details, including what the project is for. Is Google about to release this as an alternative to Windows?" Google is preparing its own distribution of Linux for the desktop, in a possible bid to take on Microsoft in its core business - desktop software. A version of the increasingly popular Ubuntu desktop Linux distribution, based on Debian and the Gnome desktop, it is known internally as 'Goobuntu'.

Google confirma sistema operacional, mas nega comercialização

 

Google confirmou, nesta terça-feira, que desenvolveu um sistema operacional baseado em uma distribuição do Linux. O site theregister.co.uk divulgou ontem que a empresa poderia lançar o sistema comercialmente, chamdo "Goobuntu", baseado no Linux Ubuntu.

Sonya Borälv, porta-voz da empresa, divulgou em nota que "usamos uma versão do Ubuntu internamente, mas não pretendemos lançá-lo no mercado". Um funcionário do Google publicou em um fórum do site slashdot.org que "o Goobuntu é muito bom, mas não vamos lançá-lo no mercado. De qualquer forma, se não for usado aqui dentro, não funcionaria."

Goobuntu, a threat for Microsoft

When Goobuntu reaches the streets of the U.S and the rest of the planet, Microsoft would be in big problem.

Up until now, the Desktop World has been dominated by Microsoft Operanting System and all its family of applications.

Linux has not been able to get into that world, mainly because of the Word Precessing and Spead Sheets Applications like Microsoft Office, the Image Editing Tools like the Macromedia Application Set and some other Applications that did not have an “easy” to use Linux Application counterpart. It seems Goobuntu is goint to solve al that.

How is Microsoft going to react? Microsoft has been very busy trying to build its own search engine, they have been on top of the Desktop World for so long, with almost no competition, that has allowed Microsoft to feel a little relaxed about it. But this could change.

Ubuntu itselt is a hit already, reportly more than 6.000 computers run that Linux version derived from the Debian Distribution and the Gnome Desktop, but the numbers multiply by 2 every 6 months, with the help of Google that geometric progresion could speed up by a factor of 300, thus in a few months the Goobuntu Operating System could be installed on thousands of milions of computers thought the world

If this happen, could really rumble the Software Industry not only Microsoft.
