St. Elmo's fire
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia St. Elmo's fire (also St. Elmo's light[1][2]) is a weather phenomenon in which luminous plasma is created by a coronal discharge from a sharp or pointed object in a strong electric field in the atmosphere (such as those generated by thunderstorms or created by a volcanic eruption). St. Elmo's fire is named after St. Erasmus of Formiae (also called St. Elmo, the Italian name for St. Erasmus), the patron saint of sailors. The phenomenon sometimes appeared on ships at sea during thunderstorms and was regarded by sailors with religious awe for its glowing ball of light, accounting for the name.[3] Because it is a sign of electricity in the air and interferes with compass readings, some sailors may have regarded it as an omen of bad luck and stormy weather. Eu sei que o fogo de Santelmo é bem explicado, mas eu conheci lendo sobre um efeito inexplicado (e até duvida-se que exista, apesar de ter bastante registro testimonial), 'ball lightning'.
 Tem história duma porrinha dessas entrando numa igreja, explodindo e matando uns poucos e jogando uma galera em 1630 e poucos Tem uma outra dum cientista de 1700 e tantos que fez um experimento parecido com o famoso pipa-e-chave do Benjamin Franquilino e tomou uma ball lightning literalmente na testa. Morreu na hora, e o cara que tava junto com ele tomou um baque fodido  Umas das teorias sobre a origem e composição de ball lightning diz que é um efeito parecido com esse St Elmo's Fire, mas que se 'destaca' da ponta e sai flutuando porae, até explodir e matar geral. Conseguiram recriar um negócio parecido, mas nem tão grande nem duradouro quanto o relatado nessas histórias |
