OK, here's a summary. It may seem long, but as with most conflicts the situation is incredibly complex.
Thailand has been in Political Chaos for years, but this became critical when the former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra came to power in 2001. Thaksin enacted a number of radical populist policies and garnered a huge groundswell of support from the rural poor. Such policies included:
major educational reforms such as school decentralization
healthcare policies such subsidized universal health care and low-cost universal access to anti-retroviral HIV medication (ARVs).
policies to encourage renewable energy and energy conservation.
His growing power concerned the Thai elite who felt his influence could jeopardize their position of power. He was beset by a number of allegations that he was benefiting financially through conflicts of interest and was blocking freedom of expression by shutting down TV programs and broadcasts. The "civil society" also became concerned over allegations of corruption and his brutal war on drugs, which saw summary executions. He was also criticized for his heavy handed response to violence in the Muslim-dominated south.
Despite this, Thaksin was successfully re-elected in 2005 in one Thailand’s biggest voter turnouts.
In January 2006, three days after new Thai Telecommunication Act (2006) had passed, Thaksin’s family sold all stake in Shin Corporation, a leading communication company in Thailand, to Temasek Holdings with tax liability exemption and made 73 billion baht (US $1.88 billion). This became a rallying point for dissenters who organized into groups to demonstrate against Thaksin.
The first significant protest was an anti-Thaksin rally that took place on February 4, 2006 with a turnout of 40,000 - 50,000 people. These protesters were predominantly urban upper/middle class royalist Bangkokians called "Blue Blood Jet Set".
These protests became increasingly heated over the period of build up towards the 2006 election April, and a coup was organized.
Thaksin won the April elections but the result was incredibly controversial. On September 19, the Thai Army units loyal to the army chief of staff, Gen Sonthi Boonyaratglin, staged a coup attempt in Bangkok which was met with little resistance. By the morning of 20 September, tanks and military vehicles armed with machine guns were stationed at Government House.
That set the stage for the power struggle we see today between Thaksin loyalists (the National United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship or UDD) and those loyal to the army, aristocracy and their traditional Democrat Party.
The Yellow shirts broadly support the King and Thai elite, and are associated with Monday, the day of the week that Thailand's revered king was born on. Thaksin's UDD supporters picked the color red to distinguish themselves from the Yellow Shirts.
A series of red shirt political demonstrations backed by Thaksin took place from 26 March to 14 April 2009 in Bangkok and Pattaya. Up to 100,000 people demonstrated in central Bangkok at the height of the protests; most of whom were rural poor. These protests were met with fierce resistance by Thai soldiers in full combat gear who used tear gas and fired live rounds and training rounds from automatic weapons to clear protesters.
In 2010 the protests escalated once again following a Supreme Court ruling on the seizing of Thaksin’s assets for “unusual wealth”. The Court found that Thaksin was guilty of four out of five counts of corruption, and ordered that 46 billion in his assets be seized. The Government expected major unrest immediately following the announcement of the verdict, but the UDD did not initially respond, instead announcing that they would hold a large scale protest in Bangkok on 14 March to call for elections. The progress from that point onwards is as follows:
14 March 2010: Red-shirts converge on Bangkok, hold first big rally, occupy government district
16 March 2010: Protesters splash their own blood at Government House
30 March 2010: A round of talks with the government ends in deadlock
3 April 2010: Red-shirts occupy Bangkok shopping district
7 April 2010: PM Abhisit orders state of emergency
10 April 2010: Troops try to clear protesters; 25 people are killed and hundreds injured
The recent violence erupted when protesters once again ignored an ultimatum to end their occupation of a barricaded zone in an upscale commercial district in Bangkok, where they have been camping for more than month, or face two years in prison.
The red shirted protester shot by the sniper in that video represents the current status of that conflict.
