Default Momentos rlz dos games

04-09-08, 22:05 #1

Sometimes all it takes to propel a game from "memorable" to "awe-inspiring" is a moment of jaw-dropping magnificence.

Over the following pages are 50 moments of inspiration, fright, laughter and intense sadness. We invite readers to add to the list in the comments section--we realize there are many more moments besides what we've listed here--but these are the moments that will stay with us forever.

SPOILER ALERT: While many entries aren't classifiable as "spoilers," there are others that most certainly are. Tread with caution, and clearly mark comments with spoiler warnings if needed.

Super Mario Bros.
1UP bug
1985

At first, it took a few tries to sync up your jump with that Koopa shell. But once you hit the sweet spot, that shell bounced back and forth against that block, it allowed many less-coordinated gamers to get to the famous "another castle" where the princess was held captive.

Metroid
Samus is a woman
1987

?Great!! You fulfilled your mission. It will revive peace in space.? Spacesuit getup flickers away. Samus is? female?! It?s still one of the best twists in gaming.

Contra (NES)
The Konami code
1988

For most players, three lives simply wasn?t enough to beat Contra. Pressing Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A and then start upped the life count to 30, making the game actually possible to beat.

SimCity
When Aliens Attack
1989

The Will Wright classic eschewed surprising gameplay moments for an understandable, concrete set of rules. That just made it all the more surprising when the aliens came down and punished the sparkling metropolis.

Tetris
First Tetris
1989

Many puzzle games have come and gone, but after you land your first tetris (i.e., making four lines disappear at once), you?ve already figured out which puzzler is the best of all time.

The Secret of Monkey Island
Insult Sword Fighting
1990

Monkey Island was a title that actually rewarded you for brushing up on your one-liners, thanks to an ingenious fencing system where witty retorts earned you victory. "How appropriate. You fight like a cow."

Sonic the Hedgehog
Blast Processing
1991

Sure, ?Blast Processing? was essentially a term created in the marketing department at Sega, but being able to launch Sonic through roller coaster-like levels made Nintendo?s rotund plumber seem sluggish and not nearly as ?x-treme? as Sega?s mascot.

Mortal Kombat
Fatalities
1992

One could single out Scorpion?s fire-breathing fatality, or Sub Zero?s classic head/spinal column rip. But there are so many worthy fatalities (many still shocking even for a 16-bit game) in the Mortal Kombat franchise that we?ll just leave it with ?Finish Him.?

Star Control II
The Syreen sex scene
1992

Meeting the blue-skinned female alien race was pretty good already, but then their leader touches you right in the lower screen area, turns off the lights, and makes you a man. Mass Effect did something similar, but you always remember your first.

Wolfenstein 3D
How Hitler really died
1992

History claims that Hitler committed suicide in his bunker, but those who beat Wolfenstein 3D know that William Joseph Blazkowicz is the one who took down the most hated Führer. The DeathCam replay was just icing on the bloody cake.

Freddy Pharkus Frontier Pharmacist
Analyzing horse flatulence
1993

When horse flatulence threatens frontier life, Freddy Pharkus hikes up his pants and gets to work on a cure. The gaseous sounds combined with an image of a horse?s tail shooting upwards is burnt into our brains.

Gunstar Heroes
Seven Force
1993

In a game full of breathtaking boss battles, Seven Force topped them all by being seven breathtaking boss battles in one. Battling Green was arguably the greatest technical and action game accomplishment on the Genesis.

Super Street Fighter II
Car smashing
1993

The actual fighting in SSFII was suberb for its time, but there is still something immensely satisfying about destroying a luxury sedan with your bare hands in the game?s bonus round.

Chrono Trigger
On trial for kidnapping
1995

Puttering around the Millenial Fair at the beginning of the game, it never occurred to most players that Chrono Trigger was watching them. When you got hauled off to court, every stupid thing you did was held against you. This was the game equivalent of getting detention for the first time.

Mario 64
A new dimension
1996

Mario 64 had such an impact when it first arrived, and is still influencing videogames today. The real magic happened when gamers came to the realization that they had true freedom of motion in three dimensions. A groundbreaking moment for development and the perception of games in general.

Resident Evil
Hell dogs in the hallway
1996

Walking in on the first zombie triggered one of gaming?s most memorable cut scenes, but it was the hell dogs jumping through the window early in the game that burnt into gamers? brains what Resident Evil stands for?being scared shitless.

Tomb Raider
Surprise: a T-rex
1996

You?re roaming around a valley, blasting away smaller velociraptor-like dinosaurs?no problem. Then their 20-foot relative comes out of the shadows. Your only choice? Shoot and run. (Pic from remake Tomb Raider Anniversary.)

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
The Inverted Castle
1997

Symphony seems like it comes to a cruel end when Alucard has to battle Richter. But if the player does it the right way, Richter can be saved and the inverted castle unlocked. The fact that this excellent game, instead of ending, became twice as long ensured it instant classic status in the hearts of many frugal gamers.

Fallout
The Glow
1997

The highly radioactive area known as ?The Glow? was an exercise in ?show don?t tell? storytelling, which Black Isle Studios executed masterfully. Some fans revere The Glow as the best part of the overall series. (Pic courtesy nma-fallout.com forums.)

Final Fantasy VII
Aeris? death
1997

When talking about ?games that make you cry,? Final Fantasy VII and the death of Aeris always come up. The tragedy is beautifully and effectively portrayed by mingling powerful imagery with a tear-jerking score.

Goldeneye 007
Split-screen mayhem
1997

Once console players got a taste of Goldeneye?s accessible four-player split-screen gameplay and near-perfect level design, there was simply no choice but to partake in a year-long videogaming bender.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
The Master Sword
1998

Finding the Master Sword in Ocarina of Time was a stirring moment, as you took the legendary blade and awakened seven years later, now old enough to take on the King of Evil, Ganondorf.

Metal Gear Solid
Psycho Mantis battle
1998

One of the most memorable boss battles in the history of games, Solid Snake?s fight against ex-KGB psychic Psycho Mantis isn?t necessarily difficult, but fiendishly clever. From ?moving? your controller with his mind, to reading your ?past? (i.e. memory card files) to having to change to controller port 2 to avoid his mind-reading abilities, Mantis? last stand was one to remember.

Thief: The Dark Project
Tricked
1998

There is a cut scene in Thief that is perhaps the best story development in the game: when Constantine and Viktoria reveal their true intentions. The cinematic is truly horrifying and representative of the superb storytelling of Looking Glass? game.

Soul Calibur
Witness the technical prowess
1999

Not only was Soul Calibur?s weapons-based fighting the best available, but the Dreamcast offered a true leap from the 32-bit generation, as Soul Calibur exhibited the most detailed, best animated 3D polygon fighters of the time. It was truly jaw-dropping.

Deus Ex
A Story That Bends to Meet You
2000

Everyone has a different moment where they realized Deus Ex would not only let you do what you want, but slightly change the story to accommodate. Choosing to kill Agent Navarre on the captured airplane was that moment for many.

Diablo II
The Secret Cow Level
2000

After defeating Diablo and coming out of the monster-clicking trance, there was still one more thing to do?open up the secret cow level, flush out the evil hell bovines, and crush the malevolent cow king. Blizzard has always been able to tell a great joke.

Shenmue
"I'm looking for some sailors"
2000

This moment actually dragged out for a good portion of the game, as Ryo searched desperately for any sailors he could find. The resulting accidental innuendo was eyebrow-raising, and people still laugh at it today.

Tony Hawk?s Pro Skater 2
Mastering the manual
2000

The original Tony Hawk?s Pro Skater was great in its own right, but introducing the ability to manual allowed skilled players to use an entire level for a single combo, sending high scores skyrocketing.

Grand Theft Auto III:
Six-star wanted level
2001

Being able to single-handedly wreak havoc on Liberty City was so satisfying because of the odds you were up against. After killing numerous law enforcement types, they send everything after you at the six-star wanted level: cops, feds, roadblocks, choppers and even tanks. Exhilarating.

Ico
Holding hands with Yorda
2001

Team Ico gave gamers a powerless girl to watch after and to guide through myriad puzzles and obstacles. The genuineness of the resulting relationship was one that is perhaps unmatched in any game to date.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Everything in Metal Gear Solid 2
2001

Taking Snake away and forcing players to be Raiden. Taking Raiden's clothes away and forcing players to be naked Raiden. Otacon's soliloquy. The ending. Picking a single memorable moment in MGS2 does a disservice to its unrelenting assault of madness.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
Going ?insane?
2003

Do not adjust your GameCube. Eternal Darkness had you ?hallucinating? that your GameCube was malfunctioning, and among other things, seeing your character?s limbs fall off, only to have her scream herself back into normalcy. It sounds weird because it is, in a completely endearing way.

Knights of the Old Republic
You are Darth Revan
2003

For the majority of Knights of the Old Republic, the entire galaxy speaks in hushed tones of the unadulterated evil of the missing Darth Revan. When it comes out that the protagonist is actually the missing Sith lord, the context of the entire game changes in a single, jaw-dropping instant.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Meeting Farah again for the first time
2003

The relationship between the Prince and Farah grows so realistically throughout the game that when she dies, it feels like a real loss. That loss is even more palpable when time is rewound to undo the entirety of the game. Farah is alive, but that lovingly cultivated relationship is lost to her.

Half-Life 2
Going to Ravenholm
2004

You soon learn why ?We don?t go to Ravenholm.? In this spooky setting, headcrabs and zombies made for good bullet fodder, but the real treat was getting some quality time with the Gravity Gun.

Halo 2
Master Chief rides the bomb
2004

The cunning Covenant managed to sneak a massive bomb on board Master Chief?s station. Halo?s hero asks permission to leave to ship ?to give the Covenant back their bomb,? and the way he does it is like some kind of intergalactic Slim Pickens. He returns the gift, blows up the Covenant ship and manages to space jump back to his station. Would you expect anything less?

World of Warcraft
"Leeeroooy Jenkins!"
2004

In the Blackrock Spire area of WoW, the enthusiastic character Leeroy Jenkins (Ben Schultz in real life) prematurely rushes to his doom, bringing the rest of his group down with him, instantly creating an Internet craze. It may be staged, but at least he got chicken.

God of War
The gods demand sacrifice
2005

Few violent games are brave enough to make the player think about the depraved acts they may be committing. God of War made the player think about it for what felt like an eternity, as Kratos had no choice but to push a caged soldier up a seemingly endless incline, towards a burning death. The sense of guilt lingered for days.

Guitar Hero
Star power
2005

You never read the manual, so you were surprised when you instinctively angled the headstock upwards and activated Star Power. It was yet another reason you couldn?t put down that fake guitar.

Psychonauts
Who is the Milkman?
2005

Every level in Psychonauts is strange and wonderful, and the best one of all is The Milkman Conspiracy. The brain of this conspiracy theorist is portrayed as a suburbia so twisted by paranoia that you can't even trust which direction is up.

Shadow of the Colossus
Agro?s fall
2005

By the end of Shadow of the Colossus, you?re emotionally invested in your faithful companion, your horse Agro. The bond between Wander and Agro would be stuff of videogame legend in itself, but when your loyal steed sacrifices his well-being on a crumbling bridge far above a canyon, that relationship transcends most seen in gaming today.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
The Dark Brotherhood beckons
2006

They come soon after you commit murder against the innocent. Then you have a choice: walk with the virtuous, or stray to the side of The Dark Brotherhood. Those who chose dark over light were rewarded with one of the best storylines in an RPG

Gears of War
Berzerker battle
2006

Few videogame battles are able to match the visceral terror brought forth by the Berzerker. Narrowly dodging this femme-beast while leading her outside to finish her off with the Hammer of Dawn left gamers with pounding pulses and sweaty palms.

Dead Rising
A coincidental lawnmower
2006

The only thing keeping photographer Frank West from getting back into Willamette Mall is a substantial group of zombies standing in front of the doors. By some stroke of luck, a careless groundskeeper (probably now undead) left his industrial-sized lawnmower next to the mob. You can imagine what happens next.

BioShock
?Would you kindly?
2007

This revelation not only represented a chilling twist in the story of your character, but the point in the game where you kill Andrew Ryan exhibited artistic purpose by briefly taking control away from the player?you?re not a man, but a slave to the wishes of outside entities.

Call of Duty 4
Shock and awe
2007

It?s not too often that a developer will kill off a main character, especially so dramatically, as Infinity Ward did in Act I of Call of Duty 4. This moment was too close to real for comfort.

Halo 3
Reminder: I fragged you
2007

Halo 3?s robust online modes let players snap pics from matches and share them with friends (or enemies). Walking into work to see that your computer?s wallpaper has been changed to an image of your online Halo 3 character getting a rocket to the face is humiliating for you, hilarious for the perpetrator.

Portal
The ?Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device?
2007

While the final sequences of Portal are also brilliant, picking up the initial version of the ?Portal Gun? and realizing its capabilities was a bit like being reborn as a gamer.

No More Heroes
?F---heads?
2008

When you start playing No More Heroes, you don?t really know what to expect. Near the beginning, Travis Touchdown launches into the air, severs the heads off of multiple enemies with one swoop of his beam katana and exclaims ?F---heads!? At that point you knew what this unique and morbidly hilarious game was all about.

Faltou alguns clássicos mais clássicos:

DooM 2:

Quake
Em uma das fases do Quake, há a misteriosa inscrição "Dopefish was here".

Warcraft e Starcraft

Megaman X
A morte do Zero é triste

Mega Man 3
HOLY SHIT, PROTOMAN IS MEGAMAN'S BROTHER?

Battletoads

Mega Man X

Ele luta contigo no 5 char.

Na verdade, ele fala ao contrário "To win this game you must kill me, John romero"
Eu vi isso no livro "masters of doom'.

Repita o processo.
